I have a One-Year Old!!!

So, several months ago I made the statement to Russ that Eliot's birthday was coming sooner than I'd planned. While that doesn't make logical sense as it's a date on the calendar, it makes a lot of sense to me. As I kept thinking about it, it occured to me that his "first year" only lasted 6 months. No wonder it felt so fast! I got here when Eliot was just over 6 months old. What does him turning one mean? Do I have a 'baby' anymore or are we onto toddler-land? To be honest, I'm super excited about him growing up, just not so fast. I'm not sure if it's the teacher in me, but I can't wait to see him recognizing letters and figuring out cute little math problems (is there such a thing?) I can't wait to see what clever little things come out of his mouth after growing up with Russ as his dad. I'm excited about picking out snacks to take to school for Eliot on his birthday and packing a little bag of yum for he and Russ to take to the Cardinal game w/ his little baseball mit. I'm so excited to see what trouble he and the dogs get in together and I pray that someday we'll see what a great big brother Eliot could be. I wonder what kinds of things he'll put on his birthday list when he's 8 years old and what sneaky surprises Russ and I will come up with for him.

It seems that everyday, he's more mobile. Every day he's smarter and cuter. This is the stuff that rocks my world. This is why people end up w/ 7 children, they're too stinkin' amazing. Yes, I'm not so naive to believe that children are a piece of cake, but I am just loving this. All odd beginnings aside, this is without a doubt where I'm supposed to be. I can't wait for you all to meet him, hopefully before I eat his face off because it's so cute!

  1. Here is a big birthday wish to the newest one year old in the family, from way up here in Pennsylvania! Watch out Eliot, she's not kidding about those surprises she's planning for you. Your mommy can be preeeetttty sneaky! Congrats on the one year mark.....it is a great time. The stuff that is coming up just gets better and better! He is so cute! I can't wait until Cooper and he can play together some day. Cooper can share his life experiences with Eliot, being the big mature 2 and half year old he is. I am glad Eliot had a good pre-birthday and birthday. I enjoy reading your blogs......you are an inspiration!
    Tell Russ I said hello!
You keep writing and I'll keep reading...we're always thinking about you.

  3. No, kids are not always a "piece of cake", Katie -- but Oh, so always rewarding and such blessings! Let me warn you -- those feelings only get stronger as they grow older. And it doesn't stop when they are 18 -- or 21 -- or EVEN the ripe old age of 30. They still feel like 'your kids', and you still want to see those smiles, and your heart still breaks if you see a tear. And I still feel like you are 'one of mine'! So very proud of you and the woman you have become, and the Mom you are becoming. Eliot is one lucky little fellow! Hugs all round, 'Aunt Pam'

  4. Katie, what a handsome 1-year-old you have. Please try not to eat his face off, because it will scare Owen when we call meet up for the Cubs/Cardinals series in St. Louis next season.

  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Eliot! Yes, Katie, they are amazing. My "baby" is 2-1/2 and its amazing what he learns almost everyday. Some days I look at him and wonder where my baby went, but then I think of all the things he's learning and how cool that can be - becoming a little person! (Limit-pushing, too, but those are only temporary moments - as my own mother keeps reminding me!)

  6. As fast as a real year-long first year goes by with babies, I can't imagine how your first six months with Eliot must have flown by! How fast he's gone from a baby to a ONE YEAR OLD! And a cute one he is!!!

Enjoy the blessing of your sweet little boy. There's tons more fun to come!

    Happy Birthday Eliot!

  7. You're right, time does go too fast. Today was Maggie's last day of preschool, she starts kindergarten in the fall. It goes fast, but it is so great to watch them grow up and develop their own personality. It won't be long and you'll be telling him to stop eating the dog food and to get the chopstick out of his nose. And even in those moments when you want to pull your hair out and scream, one look at that face and you can't help but smile.
