Thoughts

Just a little recap for memory sake of the historic night. Russ and I took serious advantage of the many free offers yesterday! We had a night of expense-free fun! Eliot got a Halloween card from my parents which included a McD's gift card and I had a few little Monopoly coupons(more on that later). So we started our night with a free meal. Then we met friends at Ben and Jerry's and got our free ice cream of any flavor we chose. Before heading home to set up camp in front of the television, we hit Starbucks for a yummy cup-o-joe. I mean, I was lovin this night of free yum!

After putting a sleepy Chocolate Chip to bed, we grabbed our laptops and turned on the tube. In keeping with the theme of a technology-centered election, we started watching the live-feed of people's status' on facebook. If you're not a FB person, your 'status' can be updated as often as you want and is a way to communicate recent news on a regular basis about yourself.

Now, I realize people were both really excited and really disappointed but... oh. my.

There was the typical support for Obama and excitement for the change coming. There was acknowledgment of the good race that McCain ran, etc. But then there were the people taking it to the next level. And by 'to the next level' I mean, come down off the ledge, people! I can handle jokes about moving to Canada but announcing to the FB world that you're emptying your bank account ASAP? Statements like "God help us" and "May God have mercy on the people of our country?" and "We will have to trust in God now?"

REALLY???? Couple thoughts:

1. Last I checked, the definition of a "Sovereign" God was pretty clear. That doesn't change no matter who gets elected, whether it's Obama, McCain or one of my beloved Spice Girls. (Campaign slogan: Tell me whatcha want, whatcha really really want...)

2. God is and always has had mercy on the people of our country. Let's revisit The Gospel, shall we? Hold the drama, peeps. God's mercies are God's mercies.

3. Now? Now we have to trust God? Hmmm. Glad that finally started.

Don't hear what I'm not saying, bloggees. I wasn't sold on either camp this time around. There were elements I liked about both candidates and elements I didn't trust about either of them. Some stati (plural for status, I just made it up) I appreciated were someone being "cautiously optimistic" and "disappointed but excited as well."

Anywho, what's done is done. I keep coming back to the scripture where the disciples cast lots to determine the new guy. Casting lots, huh? For a position in the big 12? So we could have just flipped a coin and God would have been with that decision? I'm glad He's that big. This will be a new season and both good and bad fruit will come of it all.

For now, I'm appreciating the redemption aspect of what just happened. I am looking at a little brown face this morning that has less boundaries than he had before yesterday.

Hey! If you're gonna throw out conferences in your posts.... "Casting lots, huh? For a position in the BIG 12?," I'd prefer you be loyal to the area your husband grew up in and use the SEC in your illustration. So your sentence should have read, "Casting lots, huh, for a position in the.....SEC?" There much better.

AMEN! LOL! There is a blogger in my town that is just disgusted with hour our election turned out... wrote a whole ranting post about "how can you call yourself a Christian and vote for Obama" blah blah... and now she's wrote a post about how sick she is over it and wishes she could pack her family up and move to the nearest tropical border. Get a grip, please! This entire election was not JUST about abortion and gay rights.... it seems like some people are just so very narrow minded.

Great post! Kevin and I were talking about the very same points last night. My hope is in God and I will pray for the leaders now as I have in the past.

Amen, sista!!! I totally am trusting God, just as I would have if McCain would have won, just as I did with Bush. I believe God put all of them into their position for His purpose... and He pretty much rocks, soooo... I'm good!!

An email friend that couldn't post since she was at work:

I had to comment when reading that last line of your most recent post.

My 16 year old and my 14 year old Guate-teens were moved to tears as was my Husband and myself. i asked them what was so emotional, and they BOTH stated how important it was to see someone who looked more like them as a now President Elect.

Do not discount the importance of this when you look at your precious Boy today!!!
I still get chills today when I remember the looks they both had on their faces.

These are kids that have grown up in STL, and have gone to private schools. I sometimes forget how they might feel being the only brown face in a sea of white.

What ever your politics, Religion, etc. That glass ceiling was shattered last night, and we will all be better for it.

Kind regards-
Terri M

I saw a verse today that really spoke to me...
Romans 13:1 - All of you must yield to the government rulers. No one rules unless God has given him the power to rule, and no one rules now without the power from God. (New Century Version)
I preferred the NIV version but thought this one was good too.

Love your thoughts on this one. I was not for Obama, but love that the barrier has been broken. I think that is very good and important for our country and for our children.

I haven't read your blog in.....forever! But this post reminds me of many reasons why I think you are awesome. Couldn't have said it better myself. I updated my post to say I was sick the other day because I was actually with a cold and sore throat. But later on I was afraid that some crazy person would misinterpret that I was "sick" over the results of the election. Not so - God uses EVERYTHING for his good. God is in control ultimately and that is where I will but my faith. And if there is a little boy or girl out there who feels more hope now in their future because there is someone who looks like them who is now president then that makes me smile inside because a child's hope is pure and wonderful. I am not as eloquent as you Katie so I will just say DITTO. Miss you!

I can think of about 15 people that I would love to smack, and then make them read your blog, and then smack them again just for good measure. You pretty much nailed how I feel about the whole thing, but I'm sure you worded it much better or nicer than I could have. I also was not for either camp, nor do i consider myself strictly a democrat or strictly a republican. I'm a believer in listening to what the person says, not what the party says. I'm starting to really think that some people are convinced that God is a "Republican". I'm so glad this whole thing is over. I for one am going to relax and enjoy the lack of poo throwing for the next 4 years. I hate election years, people turn into morons.....
