Arkansas Gas Station

While standing in line waiting to pay for misc. items, a man got in line behind me. Here's what transpired:

Man (insert southern drawl): Is that your son? (referring to Eliot)
Me: Yeah!
Man: He mexican? (no verb required)
Me: He's Guatemalan, actually.
Man: Huh?
Me: Yeah, he's Mexican.

ignorant people are so frustrating! i had a man at costco one time ask me (when referring to the birthmark on bailey's lip), "what's that nasty thing on your baby's lip?"

seriously?

Oh my...the joys of transracial adoption. People seem to think they can ask you ANYTHING, and they end up saying the stupidest things.

David actually had someone use the N word the other day when referring to the candidates for presidency. Seriously...what year is it???

One of my friends from college went fishing down near my hometown, which would seem to be dangerously close to Arkansas. They got pulled over, I'm sure by someone I must have gone to high school with, and my friend who is Hawaiian was asked "You Chinese or Oriental?" Again no verbs. Which was followed by, I'm not making this up... "We don't take kindly to foreigners around here."

Are you kidding me?

Just the other day a woman in Dunkin Donuts said to me "oh she's so cute I thought she was a dolly from outside" I said "thank you" and she said "oh but she's not yours" I said "oh yes she is" and she said "oh she looks like a little indian or something' not sure what the 'or something' meant.

People are so dumb sometimes.

ignorance makes me angry... must... remember... to pray... for these people... :/

my fiance (also Guatemalan) has a t-shirt, and this is no lie, it says, "NOT A MEXICAN" is huge black letters over the Guatemalan flag!!! Thank goodness he only wears it under his work shirt. But it's still funny.

Stinkin' funny!! That made me laugh right out loud!

My favorite: A woman was googling at Soli at the airport and she said to her, "You must look just like your Daddy!" Me: "Not at all, she looks just like her uncle." You should have seen the look on her face. It just makes me chuckle!

Thanks for the laugh. ~H

sort of reminds me of the time a woman came up to me in wal-mart asking me "what kind are they?" - pointing to my little sisters Anna and Abby ....I grinned at her ..."they're the SISTER kind" - and then (was kind of myself ashamed later) ...asked her, "Why? ...what kind are YOU??"

"I'm white" ... looking at me like I'd lost my marbles -

ignorance ... gotta love it.

I don't have issues with ignorant people since I KNOW that I've walked in ignorance about things at different points in my life - but when it's that open ... and pointed towards my priceless, precious sisters? ... I won't stand for it.
